Nicholas Bonner offers an intriguing portrait of tourism in the North
Korean capital. (Photo: View from the Juche Tower)

Captions based on commentaries from the city's official guides, combine
personal opinions with the party line. One says Olympic silver medalist
Kim Jong Su (pictured) is working towards becoming a shooting teacher
"but is now 28 so will soon be married".

The guides speak of their pride in North Korea's independence. The
Heavy Industry Hall is dedicated to achievements of the industry and
strength in mining, shipbuilding and transport.

Bonner says people were very receptive, but occasionally shy - mainly
out of vanity. "You'll notice everyone in the book is dressed
perfectly." (Photo: Mrs Yong Ran at Three Revolutions Exhibition)

Bonner says the project was based on years of building relationships
and trust with people who do not give their trust easily. (Photo:

Bonner hopes the book will remind readers that behind the politics
"there are 20 million North Koreans who live with hopes and dreams that
we can all understand". (Photo: Guide at the Ice Rink)
